1/12 GONK Power Droid Build

[The Mad Klingon]

Working on a quick build of JPG's Gonk Power Droid for next week's Pelicon. Overall the kit is well cast with very few issues.




Replaced the kit's resin leg hoses with Wave's springs




The replacment springs look pretty darn sharp. I snipped the tops and secured them in place with super glue.




The base was masked and painted with Vallejo Calvary Brown then preshaded with Tamiya NATO Black. Next, I sprayed a layer of AK's Heavy Chipping Fluid and let that sit for 15 minutes. Then a lighter shade of the red color and more preshading. Once dry, a wet toothbrush scraped away the top layer creating this awsome worn look. The process was repeated for the orange stripe.




I painted up some junk that will eventually be attached to the base. Maybe it's the floor of a Sandcrawler or a shop on Jakku.




My GONK Droid will be painted to resemble the classic Kenner figure. I recreated the toy's rubber antenna from styrene. You remember that thing - soft and squishy - I HAD to include it on my build. Had to.

Down and dirty. Chipping and sponge techniques, enamel splatters, a dot filter and graphite pencil. Tomorrow morning - pigments and I will call this droid done.

All done. There were a few last minute issues but overcoming the unexpected challenges is part of the hobby. I'm off to Pelicon! See you guys there!

Third for the little guy. I had hoped to place higher based on the extensive painting but I suspect the judges had trouble seeing past the simplicity of the design.

Pelikon this year was the same as the last one I attended a few years back... kinda meh.
They need to do this show yearly, like the other clubs, otherwise people lose interest and don't show and vendors go elsewhere.
